You are not obligated under general rules of etiquette to get the mother-to-be a gift unless you are attending the shower. I would not worry about offending her, especially given the formal relationship between the two of you. If you were close friends with the mother then a gift would be expected. What you might want to do is just to send a card as a compliment and thank you for the invitation.

Yes, it would be rude to not get a gift. But, you don’t have to go all out on the gift. Just get something very simple like a pack of socks or booties, a couple of cute bibs, a couple of onsies and a card. Family Dollar, Dollar General have stuff like that for $1 to $3. You never know she might become your boss again in the future.

if you are not attending the shower, you are not required to send a gift.

however if you are good friends with the mother to be, then i would visit her about 2 weeks after the baby is born and bring her a gift then. a small gift. gifts don’t need to be expensive.

I say if things are tight, than no, dont get a gift. Its a former boss, not your current boss, so she probably doesnt expect you to get her anything anyway.
